Procedures and Fees
A meeting with the artist takes place before any work on a
painted portrait or any other painting begins. This meeting is conducted to
establish client’s intent and discuss all aspects of the painting – general
composition, initial ideas, mood, clothing (for portraits), size, price,
contractual details, etc.
Upon establishing artistic and business understanding it is
documented in an agreement. A 50% non-refundable deposit is to be made at the
signing of the agreement. After that Mr. Chernikov begins collecting reference
material. For portrait paintings the subject is photographed, various poses and
lighting modes are explored. The images will be reviewed by the artist together
with the client to find an agreeable composition and pose. If necessary, a
composite compositional sketch is done to sum up expressed ideas and make a
final presentation to the client. Upon approval of the sketch, a color study is
usually made for the artist’s reference to ensure the accuracy of the skin
tones.
Mr. Chernikov then returns to his studio and works on the
painting using the reference materials he has compiled.
Upon completion of the portrait or painting it is shipped or
delivered to the client. After the unveiling of the portrait or painting, the
remainder of the balance is due in full.
It usually takes 4 to 8 weeks to complete a portrait of one
person.
Portrait prices depend on size and complexity. All subjects
are painted approximately life-size. Each additional figure on the same canvas
increases the complexity of the painting. All travel, lodging, framing and
shipping expenses are paid for by the client.
Contact Mr. Chernikov for current portrait fees.
